The American TV series John Adams is showing in Britain at the moment. It is a quality production that whilst looking visually stunning is also illuminating a period of history that is greatly overlooked in Britain. I would imagine many Americans watching it would be surprised at just how English the rebellious American colonists appear.Everything about them is English...speech,clothing,habits and buildings...in fact they rebel because they wish to hold up their rights as freeborn Englishmen. Watching I feel deeply conflicted as I hate seeing the killing of British soldiers and an alliance with a despotic France whilst I applaud the stand the colonists make against the perceived tyranny of the Crown.It's not often I get to watch a programme that I find stimulating on all levels...I wonder how the story ends?

Conflicted

apparently it ends up with us becoming socialists on Nov 4 as the productive people America are forced to spread their wealth to non-taxpayers via rebate checks and nationalized health care.

Locke, Machiavelli, Hume, Montesquieu, Jefferson, Adams, Madison, Washington all to be washed away by lightweights like Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.
The revolution was a civil war, Britain was not beaten in a war with foreigners ( I discount the french contribution to any war, naturally ) but was beaten by fellow British.... it was only when the war was won that the new nation appeared.
Same sort of analogy can be used for William in 1066, there was no france at that time.
It was a actually a rebellion, not a civil war. A civil war implies two or more factions trying to gain control of a country, which would have been England. The colonists were trying to break away from England, making it a revolution. The same thing is true with the so called "Civil War" in the US, it was a rebellion, since the South was trying to break away from the US, not take it over.
Just my opinion.
Rebellion or civil war...I just think it was a shame that Englishmen killed Englishmen for a german king.
I agree, we should have been out killing Frenchmen, because their pathetic "Revolution" was a bloody mess of slaughter, since they tried to use the *wrong* Enlightenment can-opener and it got all over everything including the Hippies.
