leaden skys

We are having a little break in the wet and windy weather at the moment so we are taking advantage of this and have started to repair a nagging leak that has developed in the roof of OTW towers. The roof is a complicated structure with many leaded valleys, hips and gullies...all needing constant attention. I love the look of slate and a well formed lead flashing can be a thing of beauty...but fourty foot up on an icy roof...well my appreciation occasionally wears thin. Good quality slate (not Spanish,Indian or Chinese) is a wonderful material that can easily last a hundred years if given a little routine maintenance......so tomorrow come rain or shine its up on the roof we go with a fervent wish that gravity and I don't have a little meeting. It's at times like these American style shingles and a nail gun seem so appealing.

That's a fine but high roof! My dad re-shingled his place with a concrete type manufactured slate-looking stuff - 20-years on iot's still looking good - but don't go for a slide!
