Totally agree on a new door. I think the pic you have is a great start, and probably a visit to a French reclaim yard could be the answer, although prohibitively expensive.
Why not get a hardwood one from the merchants (Mr Sagtrouser could help you here) and design your own mouldings to go on the face?
A door like that is little without the clever slots above it from which boiling oil and other items can be dispensed! A man's home is his castle, and a castle needs a certain minimum number of defensible positions and redoubts. :-)
I want a house with a door of character and distinction...I'm fond of mine and a door of less stature would be a disappointment,I'll keep looking.
