Whilst I was away over the last few months my brother in law to be, Monkey, took the opportunity to avail himself of sloes growing in my hedgerows to produce his first attempt at sloe gin. We finally got round to trying it today and after the initial slightly medicinal smell had passed it turned out to be rather an agreeable winter warmer.

Winter goodness

Infanticide! The sloes or damsons should spend the winter in the spirit before decanting and laying down for the following shooting season, still some seven months off.
I admit that regular tasting for quality control purposes can become a habit.

Idle...my mistake but in my defence we do shoot all year round in Liverpool.

We got 17 lbs of fruit off our little damson tree in the back garden this year - our best ever crop. It's been made into various chutneys, jams and puddings this year.
Next year, we go back to making damson gin. There's no better sharpener for a December day on the pheasants.

A good cover story but that large bottle looks very much like the one Princess OTW was lifting from the winery.....scousers eh !
I have always fancied throwing a handful of sloes into the blueberry basket on the local market stall....just for fun.
