Hooray for Hollywood.

Having spent much of the holidays laid low by swine flu I had the misfortune to watch a number of films released in the last year or so.....what a mistake! Two of the films in particular, The Expendables and Iron man 2 are experiences I will not forget in a hurry nor will I get the wasted hours of my life back. The crash bang nature of the films along with asinine performances from what passes as film stars (lots and lots of white white teeth) has put me off watching 'big' films for life. One of the biggest shocks was seeing the once promising actor Mickey Rourke turning up in both films as from what I could figure out a transvestite grandmother, who knew he had such range? T.V. series such as boardwalk Empire seem to have surpassed feature films in both acting and script writing thus making a trip to the cinema for me pretty much a waste of time. I did however watch one film that I thoroughly enjoyed, a film with no stars, no budget and to top it off, filmed in Finnish. The film 'Tali Ilhantala' tells the story of Finland's victorious campaign of 1944 in turning back the ravaging Soviet red army, so a well told story with decent actors, no stars, and no Hollywood PC agenda is more watchable than any of the recent multi million dollar feature films....works for me.

Pity about Iron Man 2 because N1 was very good. I'd heard that N2 was one to miss.

The cinematic highlight of my Christmas was 'Great Expectations' with the peerless John Mills amongst others.

It suited my black-and-white telly perfectly....

I get sick of the same old faces. Once I see a star on the credits I don't want to know. It detracts totally from the story.

I am utterly sick of 'crash-bang' too and there are plenty of brilliant modern books out there which could be adapted to film.

Father Christmas brought me Bleasdales 'The Monacled Mutineer'.I've been wanting to watch it again for a long time.In these days of interminable repeats it's strange how it appears to be 'Cinema non grata'.And I do love a good chancer! With me?

He looks like a transvestite Mexican grandmother.
I havn't been to see a film since the last airplane trip. But we downloaded The Hangover and Zombieland to the laptop instead of the peanuts that United Airlines had to offer.
