Block by block

Not a pretty picture I know but we have finally started the blockwork on the gate lodge extension, which means next week we can start the real work of getting the sandstone exterior started.A sample of the existing mortar has been sent away for matching (plain lime white with a red sandstone for aggregate and colour I think) so weather permitting we should have the roof on and the old interior wall down in the next five or six weeks, oh! and several hundred jobs to do on main house....happy days.

To appease the Stasi Inspectorate no doubt...

Mrs Albert said it looked as if you had started again, how's number one son coping with the blockwork are the princesses giving him a helping hand or is he excused duties because he's still a babe.

You don't REALLY mean that about a check, do you? That was sarcasm, I sincerely hope. Lordy lordy, don't cause me to lose faith now.

Just when I thought I had a live one...

I should probably have taken pictures of the house I'm currently restoring, except it's not exactly a grand structure. It's a foreclosure that was never built with the benefit of permits, by 3 separate owners in as many stages and only the first one had a good concept of foundation strength. So that part is good. Too bad the fellow didn't know what a level was when he put up the walls. And so on with the rest of the place. 70 concrete pads and piers and a bunch of treated heavy beams later and all the rotted foundation is gone along with the concrete blocks and old bricks it rested on. Really, you would not want pictures.

Black Sheep, Thud lives in local conservation area which is well protected by local statutes and conservation societies, the area does have a tower that was built around the year 1400 but the house it's attached to is a lot younger, I think about 1700,Thuds house was rebuilt over a period of time and does show up on old maps of the area, so his building standards have to be high, but then quality work from him and his building team is expected even tho he doth protest too much :-)
