Swinging sixties

Fifty years ago this week Liverpool's top beat combo The Beatles released their first single and pretty soon the world was fascinated with Liverpool,1962 also saw the building of Paddy's wig wam a piece of which was used by my policeman father to make a fireplace in our living room. The cathedral was and still is a rather uncompromising architectural endeavour that many never really took to.For me and many others though it was a genuine case of love me do!

I suppose this building was one of the first designs I ever noticed as a departure from traditional elements of construction. Up to then it was always brickwork.

I've never seen the building, so don't have the experience of the ambience, but it certainly is iconic, and Gibberd probably went through several hoops to get it passed back then...

Although not in the same league of course, this church
here
had an interesting introduction to the community...

Scrobs, as you can guess I'm pretty much a dyed in the wool traditionalist but the Cathedral works in every sense.

Thud,
What's not to like about a cathedral that holds the Liverpool Beer Festival in its crypt?

Magnificent architecture.

I like much modern stuff though I hate 1960s office blocks and flats.

1962 was when I was born, hope the old girl is holding up better than moi! How funny, one of our old friends from London now works for Taylor Woodrow...

I love it, and remember visiting the building site (much later on of course).
