Hands of stone

My friend who is carving all the stone for my new building did a couple of test cross sections for me this morning.Watching somebody who knows stone working is to the layman (well me anyway) fascinating as a substance so unyielding seems to flow away like water. Another couple of test pieces tomorrow and I can decide on the final details before the jambs are cut and carved.....I like my job.

Labelled under 'ovolo'!

Marvellous!

I still would like to see a real stonemason at work, and was only wondering yesterday, how much was done by hand, and how much by machine, as I walked JRT through the churchyard behind 'The Turrets'!

That stone in your pic is similar to that used on No 1, Poultry, in London - perhaps even pinker!

Scrobs, roughing out done with power tools but after that its done as it always was, a curious mixture of force and dexterous restraint.

I've never seem such massive blocks of stone like that. I guess builders must not work with stone here - or do stone things custom - as I've never seen a big pile up like that

ALW, amongst its many riches California is unfortunately not gifted with any stone suitable for building. I'd like to try building in Ca with rammed earth though.

Adobe? If there's much straw in it, it's just termite kibble. Maybe hemp...
