Give us a clue

I thought I'd have a little quiz so here goes....does anybody know what the pictured object is? As a clue I can say that it is an object of social history quite rare and dating from the early Thatcher years....any ideas?
UPDATE, people are getting close so I'll answer tomorrow.

Am I allowed to have a guess? Was it acquired circa 1981?

That looks suspiciously like some version of a popper.

Is it part of a lamp of some sorts?

Old miner's lamp?

Thud said...

Scrobs, cold on the object but yes connected to unrest.

That will be a 'Wee Bairn's tear jug.' Jarrow miners would salt their tea with the tears from their hungry children. The practice was started in the 1930's and continued right up until the miner's strike in 1985 - when the practice had to be abandoned due to the high infant mortality.

SBS, no I'm afraid but thanks for the info as I will now peruse ebay in search of said object as wallowing in the suffering of those less fortunate would certainly brighten what appears to be a rather dreary day.

Haddock beat me by 2 mins, not fair, the sloping end fooled me, that'll have been where it hit the ground

albert, you snooze you loose! it hit the wall above my head by Ma Egertons pub, corner of Catherine st. and parliament opposite the rialto.

If that thing had hit you, they would have been going through your pockets to find out what your name was , so they could tell your next of kin, when I go by Parliament st I still get flashes of the Reeces electric milk vans everywhere and the mess and the old piccy house come furniture shop the ruins still smouldering, they really tore the heart out of the area
