Getting the lead out......and in.

No rain today so I spent some time leading in the cast railings I salvaged a while back into the copings of the wall we are building. Its an easy job but I think the best way still of securing cast iron and also a fun job to do.Metal has been fixed to stone this way for several thousand years and you can still see Roman examples of it today. You simply melt lead, scoop the oxide slag off the top and pour away the shiny molten lead although any dampness in the stone pocket needs to be avoided as a mini Vesuvius will result.......as I found out.

Interesting.

I would have used gaffa tape.

Very neat and tidy looking job.

Lead can be endlessly salvaged and reused, it could be that there is still a trace of Roman lead in your pouring. Or a bit of Victorian church roof.

Probably have to use some non-lead substitute in California, epoxy is kinda ugly though.

We used to term the labour as 'run with lead'!

Presumed it worked back then...
