I went for an early walk this morning along the river Dee in Chester with the family,our destination a breakfast in a neat little riverside café. Passing by the weir I noticed a rather forlorn Herron waiting for an opportunity to snaffle its breakfast....good luck birdie.

We have one who visits our village pond, and as there's been no rain for weeks, he just plonks down in the hope that any small fish will appear!
Small chance as the pond is at its lowest ever for October, even the ducks have to stand up, and all the fish have been eaten...
Somewhere, there is a terrapin, chucked in by some rockape family some years ago, but he/she survives, but maybe not for much longer...
Lucky you, having a real river to walk by!
Our herons are omnivores and will eat squirrels, mice, snakes, and even cats; once I saw a Great blue eating a Red squirrel.
I love watching herons fish. I like watching the huge grey ones in Napa eating gophers.
