The picture of
Chester on a foggy night above perfectly evokes the atmosphere of the Roman walls that surround the town. For me one of the few
recompenses of living in
England is the close proximity of fascinating places such as Chester,if you love history and architecture as I do its quite easy to get a weekly dose of the two. Chester whilst not as preserved as some European cities is a great example of continuous habitation of a city by
successive cultures. The walls are nearly 2000 years old (with subsequent rebuilds) and follow the outline of the original
legionary fort and
civitas. Add on the
Saxon,medieval and C
arolean rebuilds and Chester makes for a fascinating visit.I may like travelling around California's byways but on the right day..this is a perfect place.
