As a frustrated hand gunner I enjoy reading various gunblogs and wish I could contribute more than just salivating over the assembled hardware. My freedom to shoot was taken away from me 10 years ago now after the Dunblane incident in which a lone madman killed school children with his legally owned guns.The person involved was known to his local police to be a danger and could have lost access to his weaponry if the correct procedures had been followed.A decade later Britain is now awash with illegal guns solely in the hands of criminals...criminals that are using them with increased frequency. I have read over and over the arguments for and against the ownership of weapons (besides the fact they are fun to shoot) and I still cannot find a sound argument as to why tonight whilst typing this I cannot own a gun to defend my home and family.The contract with the govt to defend the public has long broken down...they will perhaps tidy up after the fact but in reality the British public face the armed criminal class alone.The picture above shows the entrance to a 13th century church by my home.The grooves are caused by the repeated sharpening over time by generations of English bowmen.Once an Englishman HAD to own a weapon and HAD too practise by law on a Sunday.....but then Englishmen were free and treated by their govt as responsible adults...not the children and serfs that we seem to be viewed as today. I am ultimately responsible for my family's safety...I will one day escape this society that offers me up as a sacrificial offering...a tithe to the criminals that walk free in nulabours Britain. Untill then I'm getting a longbow!

Baseball bats are handy, too. I've been going to batting cages and practicing my swing, personally.
Also, since my .38 calibre ammo is expensive to practice with, I've just borrowed one of my dad's .22 revolvers to practice with.
Soon I'll be getting a .22 of my own for more blissed-out hours of shooty-goodness, and I'm planning a shotgun for home defense. Thank God I live in Texas. I wonder what's wrong with every place else where legislators disarm victims to facilitate easier pickings for the thug criminal element? Come on back over as soon as you can.
In the meantime, can you own a crossbow? They take longer to load but really do a job on the target.
I understand you can't have pepper spray over there either. I have large economy size containers of the kind the police use, with the mace mixed in, in my house, my vehicles... and they're legal.
What does work well and there may not be a law against it there, is high quality, no-leak water pistols filled with ammonia or bleach. Get hit in the eyes with that and you're done for the day.
Your pic of the Chinese thugs is outrageous. Looking at it, I feel like smashing their faces. Unbelievable.
Rastaman...I know crossbows are pretty good but viewed as rather frenchified!...now that wouldn't do for a true Brit would it?....as for other things you mentioned...food for thought.
Just spotted this one. All I can say is "Here, here! My sentiments exactly..." I firmly believe we in the UK should have the right to keep and bear arms, as in America.
People say, oh, the U.S. is like the wild west (usually muesli-eating Guardian reader types). Well, the fact is you're six times more likely to be mugged in London than in New York. And there are far less house break-ins (home invasions) in the U.S. than in Britain. American criminals are reluctant to break into people's homes for fear of being shot by the owners.
Over here, of course, if you do anything to defend yourself or your home you end up getting arrested or even imprisoned. On top of that you typically end up getting sued for damages by your attacker(s).
We've lost our dignity since the 1920 Firearms Act. And most definitely since the days of the English bowmen...
I've got a nice Bowie knife, but I can't exactly carry that around the streets, otherwise the cops would lock me up and throw away the key.
One defence solution in Britain might be to do the David and Goliath. Get a slingshot, practise for a few months, then carry that. But it would still be seen as an offensive weapon...
I despair of the self-defence laws over here...
JLS...you are right...I spend considerable time in the States and I know where my family is safest by far.
On the bright side, a bow doesn't have much of a sound signature, they're more compact and compound (powerful for size) now, and if you've seen the bowhunting section of a sporting goods store lately they have some pretty gnarly looking "teeth" for 'em - and as combat or engagement distances grow smaller in an urban landscape, the old ways gain new importance...
