True Brit 14

I enjoyed not picking a politician etc last week so I have decided to go one step further this week by picking the supermarine spitfire as this weeks true Brit. 68 years ago, this plane flown by young British and commonwealth pilots was instrumental in turning back the seemingly omnipotent Luftwaffe. England stood alone in Europe in facing the dark tide that threatened to snuff out the light of civilisation in the world. This plane helped buy the time needed for the forces of western democracy to gather and finally destroy the scourge of national socialism. For me the sight and especially the sound of the Spitfires Merlin engine means Britain and freedom...long may they fly.

England stood alone....It's not hard to see why the Scots, Welsh and want devolution is it??

Britain stood alone...along with lots of pilots from the Empire, not to mention the Polish,Czechs and the Americans.

Not only did the Hurricane shoot down more planes, than the Spit, but the Greatest Ace of the Battle of Britain was Czech.

(Thought I'd come over YellowSwordfish and nag ya!)

Nice picture by the way....

spitfire is icon..tough luck hurricane..plus a year later tough luck to any pilot unfortunate to be flying one!...as for scots and welsh...sod them...as for other pilots ..thanks but it was fought over England by mainly English pilots....England is the major partner in the union and the one that gets the least attention as a nation...I'm English!

I'm beginning to realise you are often short for words, and lack the vocabulary to make a clear point ;)

Never short on words or vocab...just patience.....I don't need wiki to tell me the history of ther Battle of Britain....or the history of fighter commands inventory.....I just like spitfires...hence the post.

A MOST beautiful airplane and a sublime one. Our stuff was mostly a bit rough around the edges, big and gruff - like the Corsair and the Thunderbolt - only the Mustang comes close.

Gorgeous Plane! thanks for stopping by my blog about the Gurkhas, shame about your comments on "England"

If you dont think that England gets enough attention, trust me you are wrong. Scotland is a minority partner and Wales gets even less attention internationally.

By the way, the Battle of Britain was not only one by brave pilots and planes, but crutially by Radar. A Scottish invention.

I would have said British invention but your "England stood alone" thing makes me want to vote SNP.

Britain stood alone. And United.

Please by all means vote SNP...I'm all for saying goodbye to the socialist paradise that is Scotland.
