Christmas pudding part 2.

My first attempt at christmas pudding (replete with artery clogging suet) seems so far to have been a success, as the mix was rather tasty when sampled by the willing helpers. The puddings are as I type, merrily steaming away...for 8 hours!...what the hell is that about?...who has 8 hours? I suppose I may as well have a glass or two of my home made hard cider that remains from the pudding making extravaganza to see me over the next 8 hours...tis the season to be jolly indeed.

May I ask, what is Christmas pudding? We might have it over here but call it something different. Just curious. :)

Christmas pudding was in medieaval times a porrige of fruit, spices and meat.Today it still comprises those ingredients (meat in the form of beef suet)plus nuts and alcohol but is now of a solid heavy cake consistency. It is served after Christmas dinner with one of a number of hot sauces or custard...fantastic stuff.

looks like Gran, as a boy we lived in a house with no services... a tap outside and a 'copper' like the one illustrated in an outhouse. I remember the tradition of stirring the pudding and making wishes, and the lengthy boiling process
The 'copper stick'... a hedgerow stick used to stir the clothes when boiling...worn smooth and made pliable by constant boiling.. was the ultimate deterrent to childish misbehaviour.... many a time I was pursued up the garden by Mother or Gran wielding the copper stick and fully intent on using it.
(the indoor deterrent was the jam spoon...)
