True Brit 24

As we approach the 65th anniversary of D Day many of the survivors of the event will make what for many will probably be a final visit to the fields in which they risked their young lives for our freedom . The famous actor Richard Todd is one such aged veteran making the journey that in June 1944 he made as a British paratrooper...can you imagine a celebrity of today making such a sacrifice...no lattes and tofu in Normandy chaps. I am happy that Mr Todd can make one last visit to a place that will for ever remain Pegasus bridge.

Top man, hugely enjoyable actor.

I'm sure that given the chance Jack Tweedy would be there too, of course. or then and again perhaps not.

wv: crulatfi - some sort of Starbucks special?

Good post Thudders!

It just happened that one year we were on holiday close by (Honfleur), and went over to see the new bridge. The old one was actually just hoiked up and left by the canal, and seemed somewhat surreal as a 'bridge on land'.

What was nice though, was meeting the lady who runs the cafe there. She'd been interviewed on our TV only a few days before...

Dear Thud,
I was thinking of June 1981 when I made the pilgrimage to the Normandy beaches and had the good fortune of meeting Father Wood, chaplan of the 82nd airborne who jumped pre-dawn on the 6th. He was back in France on holiday and to perform a baptism for French friends of ours and he recalled the story of Murphy (the trooper who who's shute was stuck on the chapel). About the offer of a gentle English pole-digger: I love it, and the combination with the Japanese gardener would be lovely. The Queen of our Vineyard, who attended college in England, welcomes you, and promises to make you sushi for lunch. Coyote Karen has volunteerd an extra 10-ft pole ... would you mind picking it up on the way over? Don't forget sunscreen to protect your fair Saxon skin. Back to the daytime job. Later.

I love the fact that here is an actor with a bit of real character!
