Eye of the beholder etc.

I am a firm believer in the right for a person to spend their money as they please, whether on fast cars, slow horses or dodgy Russian mail order brides. I do however resent people spending money on bad architecture as it affects more than just the person responsible for the atrocity. For several years now I have passed the building above quite often whilst visiting my sister here in Utah and have finally managed to overcome my revulsion and bring myself to commit its hideousness to a wider audience. Known locally as the gargoyle house it is a prime example of too much money and too little or in this case...no taste. Unbelievably the house as pictured has recently been beautified...beautified? Oh my sainted aunt! In an area of quiet, mainly understated sturdy houses the monstrosity in question stands proudly as a monument to all things overblown,if an architect was involved in this building he should be hunted down and beaten to death with a volume of Palladio's greatest buildings.

Surely that is a funeral parlour with side chapel? Looks remarkably like a lot of properties in Oxshott and Cobham in Surrey...

It is one ugly bastard, that's for sure.

I clicked on it for a close-up and those twisted brick columns are CHOICE!

They are obviously gagging for someone to burn it down...why else would they leave straw bales on the front porch?

Oh my goodness, it's worse than I remember. Was that hideous wing/balcony thing on the left there originally? And whats with the haphazard cement block on the bottom of aforementioned atrocity?

I see I am not alone in my revulsion to the random assemblage of material here laughingly called a house and Haddock...I'm guilty as charged.

I bet you feel like ripping it down Thud, and starting again. I wonder what it looks like inside?

Mj...I love period buildings but am far from adverse to modern architecture....though I find examples of good modern work hard to come by.
