A is for apple
Apparently English apples are in decline with imported foreign varieties being the culprit or more precisely the publics desire for cotton wool textured golden delicious etc. My apple trees both ancient and new are churning out apples by the hundreds (thousands?) with a bunch of new trees due in this winter. One of the new trees I'm putting in is a Christmas pearmain, a tree that still carries its fruit over the Christmas period, a cheering sight I'm quite looking forward to seeing. The British public it seems or more likely the supermarkets only want to buy perfect apples with shiny unblemished skin something many English apples are not blessed with. I love my apples with their bumps, lumps and spots because they taste sublime and isn't that the point. The pic above shows just how heavy with fruit some of the trees are....so its more pie, crumble and crisps ahead.

Sounds like apple heaven, yum!
Fantastic Thudders! Never seen that one, but maybe on the list for the coming years at the 'Turrets'!
Apparently, there was a 'Nonsuch' in the 'Turrets'' garden up to October 1987, when the tree blew down in the gale, and was lost forever!
Today I have bought two bags from Tesco of "British Apple Selection". They are all very dark red (almost black) in colour and look very exotic.
I loathe the Golden Delicious-type varieties so am looking forward to these intriguing British apples.
Are you making toffee apples for Bommy Night?
VG...absolutely.
Blues....At least tesco are making an effort so English apples can show their qualities...eat in pleasure.
Scrobs...nonsuch are seriously tasty.
what is bommy night???????????????????
Putz...google 5th of novemeber and guy fawkes.
Thud might have lots of apples but ask him for acorns or sawdust. :-)
Italy's going the other way thankfully; from a country where Goden Delicious and Granny Smiths were the ones to a pace where apple festivals are starting to happen and even supermarkets stock piles of top notch eats.
