Let Allah sort them out

I'm all for turning terrorists....into compost, preferably by predator drone or from 20,000 feet. I would not risk one of our troops for the dump of a so called country that is Afghanistan, nation building requires civilised people who want a nation, not savages that torture women and kill children.

We have to protect our own.

What we have is a combination of bleeding heart liberals - who believe that we can bring western democracy to all nations - and military men who love a fight or who need to justify their existence (or both)

Remember that most of the lads fighting in these countries are volunteers who wanted to test their mettle and prove themselves in battle. Those in training now are dreading that they miss the show. The vast majority of them are loving every minute of it and - in a curious way - revel in the casualty rate.

That's not a very Christian attitude, is it?

I'm of the muscular Christianity school of thought which advocates sending murdering heathens to their maker pronto...works for me and as for mo's mighty warriors and their sympathisers, well fuck em!

Thud, well said sir and fuck em all indeed! Having served for 12 years in the British Army I find Electro-Kevin's comment laughable. The vast majority are certainly not loving every minute of it and I've never met any soldier who revelled in the causality rate. What a boned headed twat he is. Tosser!

I put it badly, Nick.

The recruits I see lining up at Lympstone Commando look well up for it. Good for them. I'm jealous. Are you seriously telling me that they'd want the war to end before they'd had a crack at it ?

Why would they revel in the casualty rate ?

Because it makes it real. And because everyone else knows it's real. That's why.

This war has been going on for ten years now. We all know what it is (or what it isn't) about.

Are you seriously telling me that most of the troops in 'hot' units aren't volunteers ?

In fact I give a better acount of myself on my own blog so here it is:

** Are you disputing this ?**

and military men who love a fight or who need to justify their existence (or both)
** Are you denying a surplus of generals in the British Army ? Are you denying that they need active operations to keep going ?**

Remember that most of the lads fighting in these countries are volunteers who wanted to test their mettle and prove themselves in battle. Those in training now are dreading that they miss the show.
**Well the lads lining up at Lympstone Commando look well up for it. The Afghan war has been going on for over ten years now and they should know what it is (or isn't) about. So by what measure aren't they volunteers ?**

The vast majority of them are loving every minute of it and - in a curious way - revel in the casualty rate.
**It's difficult to put this one delicately. Perhaps I shouldn't have done it at all. But a war without casualties isn't real. That's no good to chaps who want to test their mettle.**

PS - I'm not saying there isn't psycological trauma (PTSD) and personal tragedy. Nor that we shouldn't pay our respects at war memorials or give to soldiers' charities - both of which I do.

Ek. I understand your point, with a bit of a read Nick should too I'd imagine....we all support the troops and we all think spending British blood for those who hate us a waste of time.....we need to pick our enemies for our own ends not for some airy fairy idea of spreading western values to savages.

Yes. And I agree with your point too.

There are things I couldn't handle:

a) The rules of engagement run counter to good soldiering. (He who strikes first usually wins.)

b) Having to patrol with the threat from IEDs designed to maim at waist height must be an ever present worry.

c) Being at the point of a patrol with your head down (mine sweeping) whilst being the main target for sniper fire must be utterly hellish.

PS Lympstone Commando is the main training centre for the Royal Marines. I talk to their recruits (officers and grunts) as well as the ex marines who work with me and who fought in the Falklands and Ireland.

I also read books - written by the soldiers themselves - and reports from embedded journalists avidly.

Men from active combat units have a very robust and earthy attitude to life ... and death.

I didn't just come to these conclusions from guess work.

Too right, Thudders, what the hell are we doing there?

The British army at its imperial height couldn't pacify the place, even the Red army turned tail in the end and went home, what chance do we stand now with a tiny fraction of the required number of men, and completely inadequate equipment?

No chance at all.

We are wasting blood and treasure.

Time to leave, let the b****** get on with it their way, it's their country after all and we are not wanted there, ever.

I think Ann Coutler had it right.

March in and convert them to Christianity. That truly was only one of two solutions to the problem of Afghanistan.

So long as they practice a religion whose god dictates a moral system that is conditional (i.e., rape, murder, war, torture of the enemy) to bring him more converts, it will always be a hell hole.

Unfortunately, we can't let it return to being a staging ground for Islamic jihad.

Keep 20,000 troops there and drop a lot MOAB's and fuel air explosion bombs on the Taliban bastards every time they show their faces.

Otherwise, let them kill each other, oppress their women, and revert further into the 7th century.
