The bases of the new gate pillars arrived this week and after a bit of a struggle where placed in position ready to be concreted in before the next sections are lifted on. Pillars made from composite are used by most people nowadays but being a traditionalist I am going for stone much to the detriment of my bank balance...you pay for quality.

So you borrowed farmer Giles machine, seen that on Thursday afternoon crossing the village road from Raby into manor road, those pieces of sandstone look very nice, shame all the quarries in the area closed years ago and have been filled in and houses built on them.

Well, I've purchased some tools despite your refusal to pop by my place and offer your experience on Man Tools. But whilst you may be inspiration and I am demon DIYer, won't stone degrade whereas composite won't?
Phillipa, I'd like to visit but how do I? Stone ages and weathers in a gentle way whilst composite being impermeable tends to always look harsh and slightly alien to the vernacular.
Absolutely stunning. Though my Great American Hovel is not worthy of any, I'm having pillar envy anyway!
